It's a conspiracy I tell ya...

My compaq laptop has died. Typical. It's six months out of warranty.

It starts up ok and starts to boot then, depending on which way the wind is blowing, it might boot into Windows, it might not. If I try Ubuntu it generally gets a bit further (but not always) and sometimes I can even log in.

The symptoms are this. The screen goes blank. Not blue. Not off. Not black. Just blank. If I'm booting windows the screen stays a pale blue. If i'm in Ubuntu the screen stays a pale brown. All disk activity stops although the hard disk light is on. Nothing then works until you reset with the five second finger on the power button.

I've had the thing in a million pieces and back again checking for loose connections or obvious evidence of blown components but nothing (and I only had two spare screws at the end!! :) ).

I've tried removing the hard disk and booting from a live CD, still the same.

I've tried removing the DVD writer and booting from the hard disk, still the same.

I've tried removing the battery and booting on mains power, still the same.

I've even tried removing the wireless card and booting with no wi-fi but still the same.

Any ideas before I resign myself to a very expensive door stop?

Oh yeah. I did try moving it from one slot to the other but I haven't got any other suitable RAM to try. Maybe I'll have to dig into my pockets, let the moths loose and fork out for a new stick..
